Artists Statement about the Custom Cover

I created this watercolor painting shortly after my brother died. It was my portrait of him. He drank himself to death some thirty years ago. He was caught in a web of drug and alcohol abuse. His Birthday was in February, and I wanted to commemorate him by having the painting on the cover of "The Way to Happiness" booklet, so that he could help others avoid his fate.

As an artist, when I feel my world getting smaller and devoid of inspiration, go through the book to see which precept I may have stopped following.  

Then I work on shoring that one up and magically I feel my inspiration coming back to me! 

I think "The Way to Happiness" is one of the most beautiful books ever written.  I love that it has been turned into a booklet that we can so easily share.  I have read the book many times. 

The real power of the book is realized when it is distributed to others, hand to hand. Since the actions of those around you can affect your life, you are improving your own survival when you present copies of The Way to Happiness to friends, students, associates, employees and customers. In this way, you help others survive better and lead happier lives. They, in turn, pass copies of the book to those whose lives they influence, encouraging others to treat their fellows with kindness, compassion and respect.
